La Groge is located 10 minutes from the centre of Montmorillon, a picturesque town that straddles the Gartempe river. The town has a selection of restaurants to suit most appetites and a full range of shops and amenities. The medieval quarter, Cite de l’Ecrit, has been sympathetically restored and is home to calligraphy artists, specialist bookshops and painters.
The local area is rich in history, with pretty villages and abundant wildlife. The area is renown for goat’s cheese and sheep farming, with several good local markets selling regional produce. There are many places to visit, the medieval quarter of Chauvigny is unique in Europe, boasting 5 chateaux within a single fortification. St Savin with it’s beautiful 17th C abbey on the banks of the river, home to the most beautiful collection of mural roman paintings in France. The dramatic ruins of a fortress dominate Angles-sur-L’Anglin, a quaint village, famous for pulled thread and worked embroidery. The narrow twisting lanes are now home to brocantes and antique shops. Poitiers provides an excellent mix of historic buildings and modern shopping. On the outskirts of Poitiers is Futuroscope, a high tech theme park with amazing simulators and interactive games.
